As communities in Colombia strive to rebuild their lives following a devastating earthquake, the United Arab Emirates has stepped forward with a significant humanitarian aid package. This relief effort, valued at $10 million, aims to provide immediate assistance to those severely impacted by the disaster, which claimed over 300 lives and injured thousands more.
The aid, comprising essential items such as food, hygiene kits, and cleaning supplies, was meticulously chosen to address the urgent needs of the affected populations. The 7.4-magnitude earthquake, which struck the vicinity of San Jose del Palmar in Choco province on August 10, left a trail of destruction, damaging numerous homes and infrastructure and forcing the Colombian government to declare a state of emergency.
This humanitarian initiative was orchestrated under the directive of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. His leadership in this effort underscores the UAE’s commitment to supporting Colombia’s recovery, as Sheikh Mohamed had previously expressed condolences to the victims of the earthquake. The UAE ensured that the relief items were procured from markets in Paraguay, facilitating a swift transport and distribution process to the earthquake-stricken areas.
The Colombian authorities have expressed their gratitude for the UAE’s timely support during this critical period. As the nation grapples with recovery and rebuilding, international aid such as this plays a pivotal role in helping the affected communities regain stability and hope.
