Mexico Advocates Sovereignty and Global Cooperation at UN Assembly

Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco, representing his country at the United Nations General Assembly, emphasized Mexico’s dedication to maintaining national sovereignty while fostering international collaboration. In his address, Velasco underscored that Mexico can work closely with other nations without compromising its independence, adhering to principles of non-intervention and mutual cooperation.

Velasco took the opportunity to highlight Mexico’s internal achievements, such as social policies aimed at poverty reduction and a reported decrease in homicide rates. He connected these domestic issues to Mexico’s broader stance that enduring peace is rooted in social development and respect for the territorial integrity and self-determination of nations.

Addressing global concerns, Velasco reiterated Mexico’s support for a two-state solution in the Middle East, advocating for Palestine’s right to exist with secure borders. Moreover, he expressed Mexico’s continued opposition to the United States’ embargo on Cuba, affirming Mexico’s commitment to providing humanitarian aid.

Throughout the Assembly, Velasco engaged with foreign officials from a range of countries, including Spain, France, Qatar, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Peru. His discussions with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares focused on bilateral relations and preparations for the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in Madrid.

In talks with Peru, Velasco addressed the reopening of embassies following the restoration of diplomatic relations, agreeing with Peruvian officials to foster dialogue and mutual respect. Other meetings concentrated on economic cooperation, strategic investment, UN reform, and enhancing multilateral institutions.
