Bamba Innovates Backpacker Travel, Grows into Multi-Brand Tourism Tech Leader

In 2005, Paul Sarfati and Arturo Martinez introduced Bamba Experience Group, a travel company that has since expanded into a multi-brand portfolio focusing on adventure travel, destination management, and specialized trips, including women-centric group travel. The concept, born during Sarfati’s time studying entrepreneurship at Babson College, evolved from his experiences as an avid traveler, particularly a year-long backpacking journey he undertook at 18. Initially centered on independent and experiential tourism, Bamba Experience gradually expanded its scope, with Bamba Travel emerging to cater to adventure-seeking, independent travelers.

Rather than diversifying under a single brand, Bamba Experience Group strategically branched out into separate entities targeting niche segments of the travel market. In 2008, the company ventured into destination management with operations in Mexico and Peru, eventually consolidating these under Be DMC, which includes Be Mexico and Be Peru, serving tour operators and travel agencies with local expertise. The group further expanded in 2013 with Urban Day Trips, specializing in locally oriented, shorter excursions. In 2020, Baboo Travel was launched to fill a market gap for travelers desiring customized trips without the hassle of coordinating multiple planning services, connecting them with Local Experts and leveraging technology for seamless travel planning.

In a move to broaden its offerings, the company introduced Viajando Juntas in 2026, a brand dedicated to creating small-group journeys for women, emphasizing community-oriented and intimate travel experiences. Bamba Experience Group’s current portfolio reflects its commitment to catering to diverse traveler needs: Bamba Travel for adventure and experiential journeys, Be DMC for destination management, Urban Day Trips for local experiences, Baboo Travel for personalized itineraries, and Viajando Juntas for women-focused travel.

Highlighting the importance of technological integration, Sarfati emphasizes that while technology supports various business functions like customer inquiries, itinerary planning, and relationship management, it is not intended to replace human interaction. This approach aligns with the broader tourism trend of combining digital convenience with the expertise required for crafting complex itineraries and personalized services. As travel preferences and technological capabilities evolve, Bamba Experience Group aims to stay ahead by adapting its business model to meet these changing expectations.

More than two decades on, Bamba Experience Group has transformed from a singular adventure travel venture into a comprehensive suite of businesses that address different facets of the tourism industry. This evolution underscores a strategic focus on specialization, with each brand designed to meet specific traveler needs while sharing technology and expertise across the organization. The company positions its offerings around key trends in tourism, including experiential travel, customized itineraries, and community-based group experiences, ensuring it remains at the forefront of the travel sector’s ongoing transformation.
