A pivotal figure in this renewed partnership is Omar García Harfuch, the Security Cabinet coordinator, who has been actively engaging with top US officials to enhance intelligence sharing and combat organized crime. Mexican authorities report that the swifter exchange of information has substantially improved their ability to counter criminal activities.
Since Sheinbaum took office, Mexico has seen significant accomplishments, including the arrest of tens of thousands of individuals, substantial drug and weapon seizures, and the dismantling of numerous clandestine drug laboratories. The country has also expedited the extradition of high-profile criminal suspects to the United States. Officials highlight a noticeable reduction in fentanyl trafficking as a result of these efforts. This collaborative approach contrasts sharply with the policies of the López Obrador administration, which had previously shuttered a US intelligence unit in Mexico and imposed stricter regulations on foreign security personnel.
The relationship between the two countries had further deteriorated following the 2020 arrest of former Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos, compounded by disagreements over organized crime investigations. The situation was exacerbated in 2024 when reports surfaced linking drug-trafficking funds to López Obrador’s 2006 presidential campaign. Although these allegations did not lead to formal charges, they contributed to a loss of trust between Mexican and US authorities.
Despite the progress in renewing bilateral cooperation, President Sheinbaum remains firm on the importance of Mexico’s sovereignty, emphasizing the need for mutual respect in the partnership. Her administration has criticized perceived attempts by US officials to influence or create divisions within Mexico’s security leadership. This cautious stance reflects a delicate balance, as both nations aim to strengthen their coordinated efforts against organized crime, while Mexico insists on maintaining sovereignty over its intelligence operations and national interests.
