Tech Innovations Propel Tourism Surge in El Salvador and Guatemala

The tourism industry between El Salvador and Guatemala is experiencing significant growth, positioning itself as one of Central America’s most dynamic regional travel markets. This trend is reshaping tourism activities across the area, with El Salvador welcoming 4.1 million international visitors in 2025. A substantial number of these tourists, approximately 1.5 million, hailed from neighboring Guatemala.

Conversely, Guatemala saw an influx of over 1.75 million Salvadoran tourists, underscoring the increasing appeal of short cross-border trips and regional tourism. Unlike traditional tourism markets that rely heavily on air travel, this surge is largely fueled by road travel. El Salvador reported nearly half of its tourists entering via land, while Guatemala experienced even higher numbers of overland arrivals, indicating a shift in travel dynamics.

Analysts have dubbed this phenomenon “exploration tourism,” where travelers seek brief getaways focused on beaches, mountain towns, cultural sites, and nature destinations. For Guatemalan tourists, El Salvador’s surf beaches such as Playa El Tunco, El Sunzal, and El Zonte are popular attractions. Meanwhile, Salvadoran travelers are drawn to Guatemala’s volcanic regions, hot springs, and mountainous areas.

The rise in tourism traffic has been supported by improved border infrastructure and streamlined migration procedures, which have reduced travel delays between the two nations. This burgeoning tourism corridor is boosting economic activity for restaurants, hotels, and local businesses in border regions, with expectations for continued growth in overland tourism through 2026.

This development is creating new competition for Costa Rica, a country whose tourism sector is more reliant on long-haul international visitors from North America and Europe. Analysts highlight that Central America is increasingly being marketed and experienced as a connected, multi-country destination, encouraging tourism operators to craft regional travel packages.
