In light of a recent tragedy following Mexico’s victory over Ecuador, President Claudia Sheinbaum has assured international tourists that Mexico remains a safe travel destination. Despite the unfortunate deaths of four individuals during the celebrations, Sheinbaum has defended the actions taken by Mexico City’s authorities and announced plans for improved crowd management at future public events. She stressed that the incident should not deter tourism, emphasizing the country’s safety for visitors.
The president’s remarks come after the UK updated its travel advisory, urging caution during upcoming celebrations related to Mexico’s football matches. This advisory was influenced by increased reports of mobile phone theft and drink spiking in crowded areas. Sheinbaum acknowledged these concerns but highlighted that local authorities are already enhancing safety measures. The recent events on Tuesday saw tragic outcomes, with three people succumbing to asphyxiation and another to a cardiac arrest amidst a crowd surpassing one million near Paseo de la Reforma.
To address these issues, Sheinbaum outlined plans to distribute crowds more effectively by installing additional large screens along Paseo de la Reforma. This measure aims to prevent dangerous crowd densities. Furthermore, she noted that security personnel, along with federal government and the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection officials, will continue to assist and guide fans during future events. Acknowledging the difficulties of managing such large crowds, Sheinbaum emphasized the focus on public guidance rather than attempting to physically contain over a million people.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada also announced enhancements in civil protection, healthcare, and public security measures in anticipation of the next major football celebration planned for Sunday. During the previous event, around 15,000 police officers, including over 4,200 positioned along Paseo de la Reforma, were deployed but could not prevent the deadly incident. Brugada characterized the gathering as the largest public crowd ever recorded in the city, estimating the turnout at over 1.4 million people.
City officials are now advocating for fans to celebrate in various locations instead of congregating exclusively around the Angel of Independence monument. They are also promoting responsible alcohol consumption and considering alcohol sale restrictions in central areas during significant public events. As preparations continue for another anticipated large turnout, further crowd management and safety measures are expected to be announced before the weekend.
