Trump Orders Fresh Talks While Setting Prerequisites for Leader Meetings

The American president deployed senior officials to Russia and Ukraine while establishing conditional terms for his direct engagement in peace negotiations. Trump announced he would meet with Putin and Zelensky personally only when discussions produce a nearly complete agreement.
Special Envoy Steve Witkoff received authorization for Moscow talks with President Putin, while Army Secretary Dan Driscoll shifted focus to Ukrainian representatives. The coordinated missions aim to resolve remaining disagreements in what the administration characterizes as a significantly refined peace framework.
Trump claimed tremendous progress over recent days on revising proposals initially drafted by the United States. According to the president, only a few points of disagreement remain, though these involve core issues at the heart of the conflict.
The initial 28-point plan generated intense controversy, with Ukrainian and European officials objecting to provisions they viewed as undermining sovereignty. Multiple negotiating rounds have produced revisions, with the framework reportedly condensed through discussions in Geneva and Abu Dhabi.
Despite White House optimism, persistent international doubt questions whether negotiations will yield an agreement both sides can accept. Ukrainian President Zelensky emphasized ongoing communication with the American side while avoiding confirmation of any specific agreements reached.
