China’s Endgame? Pushing the US to Abandon Taiwan’s Sovereignty

In what could be a crucial move in its long-term endgame for Taiwan, China is pressuring the Trump administration to formally “oppose” the island’s independence. This demand goes far beyond the current U.S. policy of “not supporting” independence and aims to secure a definitive statement from Washington that would effectively abandon Taiwan’s claim to sovereignty.
This diplomatic full-court press is part of President Xi Jinping’s broader vision of “national rejuvenation,” which includes the unification of Taiwan with the mainland. Securing the explicit “opposition” of the United States would remove the single biggest obstacle to this goal, leaving Taiwan dangerously isolated.
The request is being considered as part of a larger set of negotiations between the U.S. and China, covering everything from trade to technology. This has led to fears that the Trump administration might view Taiwan’s status as a negotiable item, a pawn to be sacrificed for economic advantage. A source familiar with the matter confirmed the request is under review.
For decades, the fragile peace in the Taiwan Strait has been maintained by the U.S. policy of “strategic ambiguity.” This policy has successfully deterred Chinese aggression without provoking it. Beijing’s demand is a direct attempt to force the U.S. to choose a side, confident that Washington’s transactional leader might choose theirs.
The potential consequences are immense. A shift in U.S. policy would not only be a disaster for Taiwan’s 23 million people but would also send shockwaves through the entire Indo-Pacific region. It would signal a retreat of American power and a ceding of influence to China, potentially redrawing the geopolitical map of Asia.
