Emily Scarratt: The Player Who Defined a Generation Retires

Emily Scarratt has brought the curtain down on her playing career, announcing her retirement at 35 after 17 years representing England. The two-time World Cup winner, who earned 119 caps and scored 754 points, will transition into coaching roles with Loughborough Lightning and the Rugby Football Union.
Scarratt’s career perfectly encapsulates England’s rugby success story. Since her 2008 debut, she helped the Red Roses win 11 Six Nations titles and became the only English player to compete in five World Cups. At club level, she represented Lichfield and Loughborough Lightning with distinction, and she’ll continue with the latter as an assistant coach for the upcoming season.
The centre’s scoring prowess defined much of her career. She finishes as England’s all-time top points-scorer with 754, while also ranking third in caps and tries. Her ability to influence matches in multiple ways – through kicking, creating, and scoring – made her invaluable. The 2019 World Rugby Player of the Year award recognized her as the best player in the world at that time.
At the 2014 Rugby World Cup, Scarratt delivered a masterclass performance. She earned player of the final honors and topped the tournament scoring with 70 points, showcasing her complete skill set under the most intense pressure. This dominant display helped England win the championship and remains one of the greatest individual tournament performances in rugby history.
Scarratt’s talents transcended the traditional format, with success in sevens rugby as well. She captained Great Britain at the 2016 Rio Olympics to fourth place and won a Commonwealth Games bronze with England sevens in 2018. England head coach John Mitchell praised her as a once-in-a-generation player whose impact extended beyond statistics. Scarratt expressed excitement about remaining involved in rugby through her new coaching and mentoring roles, helping shape the sport’s future.
