An ad using Ronald Reagan ‘s voice has been disavowed by the former president’s foundation, just as president Trump used the ad as a reason to terminate trade talks with Canada.
The foundation stated the Ontario-sponsored ad used “selective audio” to “misrepresent” Reagan’s 1987 speech and that it is “reviewing its legal options.”
President Trump, citing the foundation’s criticism, called the ad “fraudulent” on truth social. He accused Canada of “egregious behavior” and ended all trade negotiations.
The ad was part of Ontario’s campaign against 35% US tariffs on Canadian goods. Premier Doug Ford defended the ad’s message of cooperation.
The halt in talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, threatens a trade relationship where over 75% of Canadian exports go to the US. PM Mark Carney vowed to keep seeking dialogue.
