“Choose the Path of Reason”: US Urges China to De-escalate

Amid a storm of market panic triggered by President Donald Trump’s tariff threats, senior U.S. officials are urging China to “choose the path of reason” to avert a full-blown trade war. This call for de-escalation from JD Vance suggests the administration may be seeking an off-ramp after its own aggressive move sent shockwaves through the global economy.
The appeal for reason came as markets were reeling from Trump’s threat to impose 100% tariffs on all Chinese goods by November 1st. Vance, speaking on Fox News, framed the situation as a “delicate dance,” implying that the U.S. response would be proportional to China’s. “If they respond in a highly aggressive manner, I guarantee you, the president… has far more cards,” he warned, while adding that if they are “willing to be reasonable,” the U.S. would be too.
This more diplomatic tone contrasts sharply with the president’s initial announcement, which was prompted by what he called China’s “very hostile” restrictions on rare-earth exports. That threat triggered a massive $2 trillion selloff on Wall Street and sent the Dow Jones into a steep decline, demonstrating the market’s fear of an unchecked escalation.
China’s official response has been to reject the U.S. threats while defending its own actions. The commerce ministry warned of retaliation and stated it was “not afraid” of a trade war, placing the responsibility for the crisis squarely on Washington. Beijing maintains its rare-earth controls are a legitimate regulatory measure.
President Trump himself has contributed to the mixed messaging, following his harsh threat with a much softer social media post. The call for China to be “reasonable” may be a genuine attempt to open a dialogue, but it comes only after the U.S. has created a deeply unstable and unpredictable situation for the entire global economy.
