Alan Dye is making a bold career decision by leaving Apple after nearly 20 years to join Meta. As Apple’s chief of user interface design since 2015, Dye has been a key architect of the company’s aesthetic and user experience standards. His departure, effective December 31st, was confirmed by Apple CEO Tim Cook, who announced Stephen Lemay as his successor.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed Dye’s new role through a post on Threads, announcing the formation of a creative studio within Reality Labs. This studio will focus on merging design, fashion, and technology to create innovative user experiences. The appointment represents Meta’s strategic commitment to making design a central pillar of its product development philosophy.
The new studio will assemble a team with exceptional skills in craft, creative vision, and systems thinking. Zuckerberg emphasized that the objective is to create iconic products that bridge hardware and software while delivering thoughtful and intuitive experiences. Dye will report directly to Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth, reflecting the strategic importance of this position.
Zuckerberg painted a picture of an emerging era where AI glasses and other devices will fundamentally reshape connectivity. He stressed that the new studio will focus on ensuring that every interaction is meaningful and user-centric. By bringing in a designer of Dye’s stature and experience, Meta is making a strong statement about its ambitions to compete not just on technology but on design excellence as well.
